Maxwell International School
Dance Workshop Program

A Service-Learning - Educational Arts Outreach Project

Our Mission...

Is to utilize the performing arts as a tool for education, inspiration and transformation.

Our Goals

By blending the energy and enthusiasm of youth with the dynamics of music, dance, and drama the Workshop strives to create captivating educational arts programs and supplemental resources that endeavor to:

  • Address many of the critical issues challenging today's youth including: peer pressure, bullying, drugs, racism, and violence.
  • Promote appreciation for human diversity and respect for the environment
  • Inspire positive personal and social transformation
  • Create opportunities to engage in meaningful discussions that will foster critical thinking skills, ethical behavior and healthy life choices
  • Provide positive role-models, youth mentorship, and peer to peer interaction

The Method

Each of our dramatic dances tells a story that revolves around a key issue such as: peer pressure, bullying, drugs, racism, and violence.  Other themes include: poverty, the equality of men and women, the appreciation of cultural diversity and respect for the environment.

The Program

The Dance Workshop program is very flexible and ideal for schools and community events.  It is adaptable to all grade levels and can be tailored to the needs of each audience.  After performances the workshop members are available for audience questions and enjoy going into classrooms to discuss the concepts presented in the dances.

The Presenters

Members of the Workshop are students of the Maxwell School, grades 7 through 12, who come from a variety of countries, cultures, racial, and religious backgrounds.

History

Established in 1989 as an educational arts service/learning project of the Maxwell International School, the Workshop has performed for thousands of children, youth and adults annually in schools, colleges, universities, community events and Native American Reserves.  Members of the Maxwell Workshop have traveled to perform in China, Brazil, Belize, Israel, Spain, Dominican Republic, Japan, and many places throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Program Requirements

Although a stage with lighting and sound are nice to have and certainly enhance the program; our essential need is for a performance space at least 16' X 20' plus what ever space is needed to accommodate the audience.   We also need a place close by to change costumes.   We have our own lighting and sound equipment that can be set up if they are not provided by the facility.
